Rules for Construction, Weigh-in and Inspection:
1. Numbering: Your car must be 'numbered' on top of the car using the stickers from the kit to match the number written on the outside of the car box.
2. Construction:
- All cars entered will be constructed from the "Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit" provided. If needed, you may purchase an additional kit at Official Cub Scout locations.
- The wheels, axles and body must be from an "Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit". All others will be disqualified.
- You can add external parts (spoiler, exhaust pipes, etc) that are not part of the "Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit" as long as they still meet the size restrictions detailed below.
- You may not use last year's car, or any part of a previous car, including wheels.
3. Inspection: All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race. The Cub Scout MUST enter his own car. This means that the Cub Scout must be present at "Inspection and Registration" to enter his car into competition.
The inspection points are as follows:
- Car must be made during this school year.
- Width <=2.75 inches
- Length <= 7.0 inches
- Weight not to exceed 5.0 ounces or 141.75 grams. Judges scale is final.
- Clearance of at least 3/8 (0.375) inches is HIGHLY recommended.
- Leading or trailing edge of any wheel cannot extend beyond car.
- Hubcaps, washers, inserts, sleeves, bearings and bushings are prohibited.
- Axles are allowed to be de-burred and polished only.
- Wheels are allowed to de-burred. No altering of basic wheel shape. No weight added to wheels.
- The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs.
- Any details added must be within width, length, and weight limits.
- The car must be free-wheeling with no starting devices.
- Only dry lubricants such as graphite or powdered Teflon "white lube" will be allowed for lubricating the wheels.
- No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car.
The Inspection Committee shall disqualify cars which do not meet the rules as described herein. Cars which fail the initial inspection may be modified at the time of the inspection and resubmitted for qualification.
4. Impound: No car may be altered in any way after it has been registered. After a car passes registration, it will be stored by the Pinewood Derby Race Committee until race day.
Rules for Race Day:
1. Heats: Heat will be completed by Dens. The Dens will be run in this order:
- Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos I, Webelos II
2. The Race Area: Only race officials may enter the track area. Race officials will place the cars on the track. All other people must remain behind the barrier.
3. Finish Line Judging: Two impartial Finish Line Judges shall be at the finish line to observe each heat. Heat finish judging is determined by the finish line sensor, but may be challenged by the Finish Line Judges. If the track's electronic finish line sensor's result is challenged by the Finish Line Judges, the race will be re-staged and re-run.
4. Track Fault: If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc the heat will be re-run. If the same car gets in trouble on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat will be re-run a third time without the disqualified car.
5. Race results: Each car will race once on each lane of the track. The results for each run will be kept and the average of the three runs will determine the Den winners.
6. Pack Champion: After all heats for all Dens have been run there will be a final set of heats to determine the pack champion. The top two cars from each Den (10 cars total) will race in the final heats.
7. Rewards and Recognition: The most important values in Pinewood Derby competition are parent/son participation, good sportsmanship and learning how to follow rules. Racers will be recognized as follows:
- Every participating Scout will receive a Pinewood Derby patch.
- Awards will be given for cars winning a unique Appearance Category:
o Fastest Looking Car
o Coolest Car
o Most Humorous Car
o Most Unique Car
o Most Likely Built By a Scout
o Best of Show (car with the most votes in the above categories, but didn’t win any of the other categories)
- Trophies will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each Den.
- Trophies will be awarded for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers overall in Pack.
8. Race-Day Rules Interpretation: On Race-Day, the Cub Scout must make all questions of rules interpretations and procedures to the Race Officials promptly. Decisions of Race Officials on questions of rules interpretations and procedure may be appealed to the Pinewood Derby Chairman. All decisions of the Pinewood Derby Chairman are final.
Note: Unsportsmanlike conduct by any participant or spectator will be grounds for expulsion from the competition and/or the race area.
